This Committee will work with the Waitt Institute to implement Blue Halo Curaçao, a partnership between Government and the Waitt Institute.

On August 17, 2017, Minister of GMN Suzy Camelia-Römer, and Minister of VVRP Zita Leito signed a National Decree to formalize the Blue Ribbon Committee—an inter-ministerial committee to support sustainable ocean management in Curacao.  The Blue Ribbon Committee will work hand-in-hand with the Waitt Institute to implement Blue Halo Curaçao.  Blue Halo Curaçao is a partnership between the Government of Curaçao and the Waitt Institute. The goal of the partnership is to develop and implement solutions for sustainable ocean management.

Minister Camelia-Römer noted that “today marks an important milestone in the Blue Halo Curaçao partnership and represents a strong commitment from the Government of Curaçao to work across Ministries and sectors to achieve sustainable ocean management for the future of Curaçao.”

The Blue Ribbon Committee has been operating informally since spring 2016 with representation from the Ministry of Health, Environment and Nature, Ministry of Economic Development, Ministry of Planning, Ministry of Finance, and Ministry of Education.

Over the next year, Blue Halo Curaçao will work to finalize a sustainable ocean policy for Curaçao, including undertaking marine spatial planning. “Curaçao has amazing natural resources that are significant assets for the entire Caribbean. We are thrilled to see the Government’s support of this important project and look forward to moving from assessment to policy development to implementation,” said Dr. Kathryn Mengerink, Executive Director of the Waitt Institute.
