Government not comfortable with mass layoffs at UTS

BalbordaWILLEMSTAD – According to Minister of Traffic, Communication and Urban Planning, Earl Balborda, the government was seriously embarrassed by the announcement made by the public company United Telecommunication Services (UTS). The CEO of the company, Paul de Geus, announced in the media that a third of the staff will have to be dismissed in order to save the company. “If it is up to the management of the telecommunications company 200 of the 600 employees must go home,” according to De Geus.

Balborda indicated that the Government, as the sole shareholder of the company, demands good reasons why so many employees must be dismissed. Employees’ interests are a priority for this government, according to Balborda. The government and the UTS management will meet on November 27 to discuss this issue.
