Government wants to set up economic fund of 1 billion

gijsberthaWILLEMSTAD - The government assumes that there is no more space to economize than is already planned. The Minister of Finance, Kenneth Gijsbertha has now stated that the government intends to save money and to invest in a fund with which economic projects can be financed in the future.

“We aim for 1 billion guilders. Naturally, the government will continue to implement the planned cutbacks in order to reach a balanced budget, but it cannot be stretched anymore,” said Gijsbertha.

“We are now thinking about the plan to have a buffer. Curaςao will have to contribute to this, but we will also discuss this with The Hague for the realization of the plans. In this way, extra encouragement could be given to Dutch companies to do business on the island,” said the Minister.

Furthermore, money could be saved by selling government buildings that are no longer in use; the proceeds would be deposited into the fund. The government could also actively seek strategic partners for public companies that can give these government companies a financial boost.
