Higher punishment for illegal possession of firearms

De Jong_ta basta aworWILLEMSTAD - The Public Prosecutor (OM) will demand, as per September 1 of this year, higher penalties for illegal possession of firearms. This is in the context of 'Ta Basta Awor', the emergency plan of the government to prevent crime. This is according to a report from the OM.

Those who possess illegal firearms have until August 31 the opportunity to turn in their firearms at the Temple Emanuel. This can be done from 7 in the morning until 6 in the evening.  “We will not prosecute you for illegal possession of firearms if you turn it in before that time. We even give you 100 guilders for every real firearm,” the OM writes in a press statement. After this period there will be tougher action against illegal weapons possession.

In addition to these measures, there will be preventative searches from now. “We were already performing preventive body searches, but now it is happening more often and everywhere on the island. This means that you can be hindered as a citizen. We ask for your understanding for these actions. Curbing illegal possession of firearms in the interest of all of us,” the Prosecutor said. In addition, there is an anonymous tip line, where you can give information about illegal firearms. The tipster will be rewarded if there is indeed a firearm found. Finally, with effect from September 1, Atrako team will be strengthened by ten detectives of the State Police.
