Jesus-Leito: “No internet at home; that’s a personal choice!”

ZitaWILLEMSTAD - If Curacao wants to become a 'smart nation' then it has consequences for all telecommunications companies on the island. According to the Minister of Transport, Traffic and Spatial Planning, Zita Jesus-Leito, these companies will have to reduce their costs to offer internet at an acceptable rate.

On Tuesday, it became known that 35.5 percent of the households in Curaçao do not have an internet connection. According to the statistics of the Central Bureau of Statistics, half of these households say that the price of the Internet is too high.

Internet is available to all households and people make a choice whether or not to take it, said the minister. "To lower prices, companies that are overstaffed will have to lay off employees." Jesus-Leito indicated that she supports the decision of the telecommunication company UTS to lay off 280 employees.
