Leeflang: ‘Minimum wage should not become maximum wage limit’

Omayra LeeflangWILLEMSTAD - Independent Member of Parliament, Omayra Leeflang wants an investigation on the minimum wage. According to the MP, many workers have been earning the minimum wage for years.

Jeanne - Marie Francisca, who is the Minister of Social Development, Labor and Welfare should request an investigation on this, Leeflang said.

Leeflang believes it is remarkable that sometimes workers who have been working for the same company for years are not eligible for salary increases. Their salaries rarely exceed the minimum wage.

“Many people only get a salary increase granted if the government increases the minimum wage. This is not the reason why the government has introduced a minimum limit, according to Leeflang. The MP believes that this is an unjust course of action and that this is not motivating for workers. She adds that an investigation should be initiated concerning all the commotion around the minimum wage.

According to Leeflang, Minister Francisca should be more explicit about how the minimum wage is applied. She also wanted to know whether Francisca is aware of how the minimum wage seems to be the maximum wage limit and whether she agrees with an investigation of the current situation.
