‘Little known about Tula day activities’

Tula MonumentWILLEMSTAD - The communication between Plataforma Sklabitut (Slavery Platform) and Herensia di Sklabitut (Slavery Heritage) and the Minister of Culture Marilyn Alcala-Wallé is not going very well. The minister indicated this after her questions about the Tula memorial organized by Plataforma.

The minister says she has tried to contact the organization, but this was very difficult. The leader of the slave revolt on the island, Tula, was commemorated last weekend. The freedom struggle was 223 years ago.

Alcala-Wallé recognizes that there is little known about the activities to celebrate the day. "I have indeed received many questions from people who have no idea where and when the commemoration is."

She says she is working on an information cycle that is important for the people of Curaçao: Tula-day is part of this, but also 3 October, the day that Tula was beheaded and 25 March, the commemoration of people who have experienced slavery. Alcala-Walle is working on a plan to get more attention for all these days.
