Measures against President Central Bank

Tromp (1)WILLEMSTAD - The situation in which there is a criminal investigation against the President of the Central Bank of Curaçao and St. Maarten, Emsley Tromp, is taking place and a possible prosecution, which was announced by the Public Prosecution, makes the maintaining of the President in that position unacceptable. There shouldn’t be any doubt in the integrity of a person, especially in that position.

The Central Bank continues to sustain reputation damage through investigations into the affairs of the President. It is expected that the Central Bank will continue to suffer if the Tromp remains in office. Especially now that recent security investigations have revealed that there was no screening in the context of fulfilling such a high ranking position.

Based on the above, the Supervisory Board of the Central Bank decided that the current situation is unacceptable and has, therefore, made a recommendation to the countries Curaçao and St. Maarten to dismiss Emsley Tromp as President of the Bank. The Supervisory Board gave a final offer to the President, prior to the recommendation of September 1, of voluntary resignation. Without result.

After more than a year, the President unexpectedly resumed his work last week and attempted to make important decisions on behalf of the Central Bank. He also tried to reverse some decisions that were already made. This development has caused unrest, aggravation of the situation and more damage to the reputation of Central Bank. The Supervisory Board and the countries of Curaçao and St. Maarten felt it necessary, in addition to continuing the dismissal procedure, also to take measures against the President. He has been suspended and denied access to all areas and buildings of the Central Bank.

Mr. Romero is once again acting President of the Central and the staff has been informed about this.
