MFK denounces President of Parliament’s functioning

Curacao ParliamentWILLEMSTAD – Opposition party MFK is denouncing the functioning of the President of the Curacao Parliament, Marcolino ‘Mike’ Franco. MFK accuses Franco of not adhering to the Rules of Procedures (RoP) of Parliament. According to MFK, the President does not call meetings requested by the MFK faction.

The MFK group criticizes the fact that meetings are requested by its members and are invariably called more than a month too late. This is against the Rules of Procedures of Parliament, the faction said.

The MFK indicates that this does not involve a single incident, but that it has become a common practice of the President and this is harmful for the opposition, which means that democracy is not being practiced as it should.

One of the main tasks of the President of Parliament, according to MFK, is the compliance and enforcement of the Rules of Procedure.

In the RoP, according to the MFK, it is clearly described how meetings should be called and should take place. But the opposition party believes that Franco is constantly acting against this RoP, by not calling the meetings in the 14 days prescribed.

"Instead of protecting our parliamentary democracy you opt to violate and undermine the rules. It is obvious that you are violating the basic rules of democracy,” the opposition party said.
