Minister announces plans to eliminate illegal construction
WILLEMSTAD – The Minister of Urban Planning, Suzanne Camelia-Romer announced that her Ministry is working on a plan to deal with illegal construction on the island. In certain cases the government will even demolish buildings and houses that were constructed without the necessary permits if they are on government properties. If these buildings or houses are on private properties, the owners will have to take steps to legalize their construction.
The Minister also announced that her Ministry will introduce a stringent policy for the issuance of construction permits. The Minister already met with all the departments under her Ministry to officially inform them that she will not tolerate corruption in these departments. “No one working in those departments will ask for money to issue permits,” said the Minister during her press conference.
The Minister did not mention specific cases, but she did say that there are cases where civil servants have asked for money to issue construction permits. This is the reason why she is giving all of the civil servants in her Ministry a warning.
