Minister of Economic Development: “Cuba trade mission a success”
WILLEMSTAD – During a press conference at the Chamber of Commerce, the Minister of Economic Development Eugene Rhuggenaath stated that the trade mission to Cuba was a success.
The aim of the mission to Cuba was to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Ministry of Economic Development (MEO) and the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Trade and Investment. Two more MoU’s were signed between the local distribution company Curoil and Cuba Petroleos (Cupet) and between the local Chamber of Commerce and its Cuban counterpart.
Rhuggenaath and the Cuban Minister of Foreign Trade and Insvestment Rodrigo Malmierca Diaz signed their MoU to boost trade, investment and cooperation between the two islands. According to MEO, Cuba is an ideal trading partner because of the common past of the two countries and the fact that there are no language barriers.
The MoU between Curoil and Cupet concerns cooperation in three areas, MEO reported. These are namely petroleum supply, investing in infrastructure and (management) staff capacity of both companies.
The agreement between the two Chambers of Commerce aims to facilitate trade relations between Curaçao and Cuba. Other companies that according to MEO took part in the trade mission were linked to similar businesses in Cuba. In this connection, the companies were able to exchange information and ideas and make contacts with Cuban companies.
