Minister of Labor takes over negotiations between oil refinery and union contract workers
WILLEMSTAD – The Minister of Social Development, Labor and Welfare Ruthmilda Larmonie-Cecilia in an attempt to bring tranquility has announced that she will take over the negotiations between the union that represent the contractors and the oil refinery Isla. She will do this only if the employees resume their labors today.
Yesterday the contractors called a strike yesterday morning, which started very calm. But during the course of the day, the employees became very agitated since the union and the Isla were not reaching and agreement. The contractors then decided to intensify their action by burning artifacts, including a car, right in front of the oil refinery gate, commonly known as Post 5.
The police closed off the road in front of Post 5 where all the employees were gathered. The situation got so out of hand that the police had to fire warning shots to calm down the employees. One person was arrested.
The union announced that the actions will continue today. The reason why the actions will continue, as indicated by the union leader Alcides Cova, is because the negotiation parties did not reach an agreement, but are now in a deadlock. The union leader said that because the parties did not find a solution to the problem, they will intensify their actions today.
After hearing the union leader’s declaration, Minister Larmonie-Cecilia announced that she will take over the negotiations. She promised a solution in two days. She talked about a solution that will bring tranquility to all the negotiating parties. The Minister said that she will only do this if the employees will resume their work.
