Murder case Magnus before court

WielsWILLEMSTAD – Four murder suspects are up in court today in connection with the murder of the late political leader and Member of Parliament, Helmin Magnus Wiels. The "mega-trial", as it is called, will take place in the high security courtroom of the Common Court at the Wilhelmina Square.

A part of the city where the court is located, is closed to the public. Only family of perpetrators and victims, and the press are allowed inside.

These measures were all necessary. The Police Force Curacao and the Dutch Criminal Investigation Team (RST) went energetically to work under the guidance of the Public Prosecutor. But that did not prevent two deaths among the six main suspects.

First, the driver of the getaway car, Raul 'Bolle' Martinez, was found in pieces on the north side of the island. Later, the alleged perpetrator of the murder, Luigi ‘Pretu’ Fiorentina, was found dead in a police cell in Barber. The official story is that he committed suicide. Both are members of the band No Limit Soldiers (NLS) from the district Koraalspecht.

The four men who are on trial this week are Elvis ‘Monster’ Kuwas (37). He has admitted to be the actual killer of the political leader. Dangelo D. (27) and Carlos P. (32) are suspected to have assisted in the murder; they deny involvement. Burney 'Nini' Fonseca (43) would be the logistical mastermind behind the murder and to have received the ordered for the murder. He also denies any involvement. Elvis K., the shooter, would have made an incriminating statement.

The investigation into the intellectual author is still in full swing. Last month, former minister George Jamaloodin was arrested. Another suspect is former Education Minister Carlos Monk. Police also arrested the lottery boss, Robbie dos Santos, the half-brother of Jamaloodin and party financier of Schotte's MFK. He has since been released.

Helmin Magno Wiels was killed on May 5, 2013 on the beach of Marie Pampoen. He was the leader of the largest political party on the island, Pueblo Soberano.
