Negotiations between government and unions continue

Minister van der HorstWILLEMSTAD - Negotiations between the government and the unions on an austerity measures package for civil servants continue. That was decided by the Council of Ministers during their weekly meetings. Minister Etienne van der Horst of Management, Planning and Services announced this during the government’s press conference.

“We will continue with our negotiations in the next six weeks,” Van der Horst said. “We decided not to choose for an escalation. If you escalate, then you cannot negotiate anymore,” the Minister indicated. This means that according to the Minister, that the government sees that there is scope to achieve an agreement which is required by law. “Whether the unions have the same opinion, we will see tomorrow because that’s when the unions will receive the government’s reaction to their proposal,” Van der Horst said.

Minister Van der Horst indicated during the press conference that he was upset about the fact that substantive information has been leaked about the negotiations. Details of the negotiations were unveiled on a local radio station while it has been agreed that both parties will maintain confidentiality. “Just to give the negotiations the opportunity to go peacefully, it was agreed that nothing about the content will be publicized,” the Minister said.
