New JJI cells improvement for young offenders

P1020780 (1024x768)WILLEMSTAD - With the construction of 24 new cells in the juvenile detention center (JJI), juveniles do not have to be imprisoned with adults anymore. This was also said during the opening of parliament yesterday.

There were several negative reports, including one from the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (CPT) and Amnesty International about this situation. However, with the construction of the new cells, it will not be long before there are major changes made. With the new design of the juvenile detention and probation center, the youth will also receive better guidance and support, according to the Governor in her speech to parliament.

However, one of the biggest challenges still exists, namely to prevent young people from committing crime. To achieve this, one should first pay attention to the fight against poverty, since poverty is usually the reason for illegal practices.
