New school year started today; teachers postpone their strike

SchoolWILLEMSTAD - Today is the beginning of a new school year in Curaçao. This was also confirmed by the Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sport, Marilyn Alcala-Wallé last night during a broadcast of the national TV station Tele Curaçao.

According to the Minister, the Government and the teachers’ trade union Sitek have reached an agreement. But the decision of the union’s members to strike or not to strike on the first day of school is the decision of Sitek and its members themselves, according to the chairman.

Alcala-Wallé stressed that there is no reason for a strike or protest because the government has already indicated how it will solve all the 48 action points demanded by the teachers. The government indicated how and when it will comply with them.

With the government decree now signed by Governor Lucille George-Wout last Monday, it is now clear that the government will comply with its end of the deal in the covenant signed by Sitek and former Minister of Education Irene Dick last August.
