No clarity on the investment of 1.7 billion

Ronald PlasterkTHE HAGUE, WILLEMSTAD – It appears that the Netherlands has no idea what the 1.7 billion guilders it has invested in Curacao, Aruba and Sint Maarten, since the year 2000, has produced in tangible results. This is according to Minister of Kingdom Relations, Ronald Plasterk, in a letter to the Lower House in the Dutch Parliament.

The Hague has transferred, from 2000 to 2012, 669 million euros in total for “collaboration systems” to assist the islands in achieving their own independence in the areas of good governance, legal, economic developments, education and public finances.

The factions in the Lower House will have the opportunity to indicate to the Minister if they are satisfied with his answer during an upcoming debate between the Parliamentary Committee for Kingdom Relations and the Minister about the financial relationship between the Netherlands and the Dutch Caribbean islands.
