No more import duties on donations
WILLEMSTAD – There is no need to pay import taxes on donations from abroad. That is a fact now with the adoption of the amended ordinance import tariff by parliament.
According to the Government, the import duty exemption on donations is highly desirable to improve the quality of education as well as sports, poverty and supporting certain institutions.
In practice, for many years exemptions were requested for donations but the rule was that import duty had to be paid. The result was, as stated in the Explanatory Memorandum to the Ordinance, that the donations were refused or were taken by the customs. This of course had to be held in a warehouse, which costs money.
Now it is argued that the storage of these items costs more than the exemption of import duties.
