Office of the ombudswoman complains about contact with government

WILLEMSTAD – Since the beginning of the Country Curaçao, 10-10-’10, the communication between the National Office of the ombudswoman and the various ministries of Curaçao are not proceeding smoothly, according to the annual report 2011 from the office of the ombudswoman. In the annual report 2011 the office of the ombudswoman lists the most important developments in that year. In this respect much attention is given to the importance of appointing contact persons in the various ministries of the country Curaçao with whom the staff of the office of the ombudswoman could communicate when seeking solutions for complaints from citizens. The office of the ombudswoman believes this point requires attention.

“It appears that after the dismantlement of the Netherlands Antilles many ministries no longer have a contact person available for the office of the ombudswoman. As a result the collaboration with the ministries proceeds with difficulty, which considerably complicates the service to citizens”, according to the annual report 2011.

In its report, the office of the ombudswoman suggests introducing a legal, internal complaint regulation within the government. “This regulation is to prevent citizens from being confronted with different procedures per ministry.”

The office of the ombudswoman also believes an external settlement of complaints is necessary, besides this internal settlement of complaints. “The external settlement of complaints offers citizens the possibility – in the last resort – to petition to an independent third party (in this case the office of the ombudswoman) regarding possible improper behavior of an administrative organ.”
