Oil refinery contractor dismisses 45 employees
WILLEMSTAD – According to a distressed union president, Alcides Cova, it is time to take drastic action. Reason for this statement is that the oil refinery contractor Curaçao Engineering Contractors (Curengcon) has requested the dismissal of 45 of its employees. The decision was made after the company missed out on a contract for work on the refinery terrain.
In a letter to the Department of Labor Affairs, and the responsible Minister, the company’s management examines the circumstances that led to its decision. The company also denounced the contracting of Venezuelan companies by the oil refinery, which goes through a local structure registered at the Chamber of Commerce.
Commenting on the development, the union president Alcides Cova said that he is concerned about the unfair competition from Venezuela for local contractors and workers. “The contractors are right. As union that has to come up for these contractors and their employees I can’t do nothing, but say that they are right. Much is at stake now. People are losing their jobs. We have to take measures now,” said Cova.
