OM remains alert to bribery in process before elections
WILLEMSTAD – Currently Curaçao is preparing for the elections of September 30. According to the Public Prosecution (OM) it is needless to say that a pure outcome of an election is essential for democratic society. “A pure outcome of elections is only obtained if everyone is free to vote for the party of their choice,” said OM in a press release.
“If people are bribed in exchange for their vote to a certain political party or person then it is no longer free elections.”
Bribery in suffrage is punishable under Article 2:44 of the Code of Criminal law. Recently a criminal offense has been increased to imprisonment of two years. It is also possible that a person convicted of bribery can be deprived of certain rights. This may include that a convicted person may no longer vote or that he may not stand as a candidate for election.
