PAIS and Leeflang want Greentown in parliament

oil refineryWILLEMSTAD – The PAIS faction and Independent Member of Parliament, Omayra Leeflang want to submit a request to convene a Central Committee meeting with Greentown, the organization dedicated to an alternative development of the site where the oil refinery is located.

PAIS-leader Alex Rosaria underlines the fact that the request does not only come from one party, by also MPs that are both in the coalition and in the opposition. “This is not coming from just one faction, because the future of the refinery is something that concerns us all.” The request from the two parliament factions is motivated by the fact that parliament has already received presentations from the parties that are for a modernization of the refinery, namely the unions APRI and PWFC.

The multidisciplinary team of the government (MDTP), which is responsible for the future of the refinery, recently held a presentation in parliament. There is also a committee in this MDTP, which has to find an alternative destination for the refinery site , if the negotiations which are being conducted with the Venezuelans, fail. During the meeting of parliament with the MDTP both PAIS leader Rosaria as Leeflang asked about the possibility to include Greentown in the future development of the area. Both also made a strong case for increased attention to environmental issues at the refinery in particular and on the island in general. In the context of the debate on the future of the refinery, all parties must be able to have their say, the factions said. This is their reason to request the President of the parliament to convene a Central Committee meeting where representatives of Greentown will be invited.
