PAIS: ‘Constitutional Court to assess bills to the constitution’

Court houseWILLEMSTAD - PAIS wants to establish a Constitutional Court. This body must assess whether bills are constitutional. According to the party, Curaçao must guard itself against disastrous government terms such as between 2010 and 2012. This is according to a declaration of the coalition party in a press release.

The intention is not for the Constitutional Court to take the place of the government or parliament, but to review the laws and assess them from the perspective of the constitution. The Court may well destroy bills before they are introduced in the event that the law violates the Constitution.

PAIS wants to see if such a Court can fulfill a common function for both Curaçao and the sister islands of Aruba and St. Maarten. There is a similar body in office in Sint Maarten already.
