PAIS: “No place for suspects in parliament”

ParliamentWILLEMSTAD – The coalition party PAIS is preparing a bill proposal that will make it possible to suspend a Member of Parliament if he or she is suspected of certain crimes. The suspension shall take effect if the MP, who is suspected of criminal offenses, does not resign of his or her own accord. The leader of the party, Alex Rosaria, motivates his bill proposal by asking what kind of country we want to live in.

The political leader and MP says that he does not want to live in a country in which a Member of Parliament who is suspected of serious crimes stays on as if nothing has happened. “PAIS also comes with the bill because we found out that we cannot count on MPs to be civilized and to step aside if they are suspects in a criminal case,” Rosaria explained.

Rosaria recognizes that political “ancestors” did not take this dastardly behavior of Members of Parliament into account. “For this reason, certain things are not regulated in our Constitution and or legal system to fight it,” Rosaria said.

The bill requires that the necessary changes in the Constitution are made. The bill indicates that Parliament has to authority to expel an MP the minute he or she becomes suspected of certain crimes.

The coalition party will consult with all factions in Parliament to implement the changes. This requires a majority of two thirds of the votes, so 14 is required. According to the political leader, this vote will be the appropriate time for the MPs to indicate in what kind of country they want to live.
