PAR wants to know from Minister: “What is your definition of poverty?”

PaulettaWILLEMSTAD - What is poverty in Curacao? That is what the leader of the PAR faction in Parliament, Mrs. Ana Maria Pauletta MP wants to know from the Minister of Labor, Social Development and Welfare, Hensley Koeiman.

According to the Central Bureau of Statistics, 25% of the people on the island live below the poverty line. But according to the PAR, there are many more groups that are severely affected such as single mothers, those with addictions, people with disabilities, pensioners and unemployed people but who still get financial assistance.

In her letter to the Minister, the MP for PAR proposes to adjust the poverty line so that other vulnerable groups can also get assistance.

“In my concept, there should be a clear and concrete resolution what the definition of poverty should be in our country. This is how we will be able to adjust all interventions done based on this definition in the government’s budget,” said the MP in her letter to the Minister.
