Parliament Sint Maarten wants independence
PHILLIPSBURG - The parliament of St. Maarten wants independence from the Netherlands. That became clear yesterday during a central committee consultations in parliament.
How the island should reach its independence varies per party. Some want straight away, others say there must be a roadmap first.
The Independence for St. Maarten Foundation was the driver of the discussion. The organization wants as soon as possible a referendum on independence for the island.
The Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte has previously informed the islands that a phone call to The Hague is enough to start the process.
