Parties nearing agreement
WILLEMSTAD - Negotiators from the coalition parties Pueblo Soberano (PS), PAIS and current opposition party PAR have agreed on a draft willingness accord for the formation of a new government.
The intention is to sign this agreement during the course of the day after a previously called meeting of the cooperating parties.
In the statement now on the table, the parties indicate that they are ready to commence negotiations leading to the formation of a new government for the country Curaçao. The document contains no mention of concrete action. This was namely the reason for the truncation of the negotiations between the PAR and the PS when the first fact remained that concrete action needed to be mentioned in the document. The PS did not accept this, because this is not common, according to them.
It is not clear whether the PAR will take the portfolio of Economic Development. This was one of their demands in the beginning of the negotiations. They also asked for the Minister Plenipotentiary in The Hague, but according to the PS, this function is tied to the Prime Minister and also they will not sacrifice Marvelyne Wiels for a new coalition.
Because the negotiations between the coalition parties and the opposition party PAR failed on Monday, the Prime Minister of Curaçao, Dr. Ben Whiteman submitted the resignation of his cabinet. Governor Lucille George-Wout took the resignation under consideration and started the usual round of consultations with the various leading figures from politics and the community.
