Prison guards demand better working conditions
WILLEMSTAD - A group of prison guards went yesterday to the office of Justice Minister Nelson Navarro at the Wilhelmina Square to present a letter about their dissatisfaction with the delay in the improvement of their working conditions at the prison Sentro di Detenshon i Korekshon Kòrsou (Curaçao prison).
The letter was first drafted at a meeting during working hours at the office of trade union ABVO and later presented and more or less explained to the minister by the staff. The guards have been facing problems at work for years, including their legal status and work materials. They have not yet received their uniforms while it should have been done long ago. Their salary should be adapted according to the scale and the level that they have and they need their child benefits to be regulated.
Also, some of them have been working without an official government appointment decree and some of them did not even take the oath, which is mandatory. The jailers want their legal status, uniforms and working conditions to be regulated and improved.
After they have submitted the letter to the Minister, the jailers went back to work. ABVO indicated that this was not a strike.
