Proposal to change downtown to tax-free shopping area

Handelskade-Willemstad-Curacao-IstockWILLEMSTAD - The Minister of Economic Development, Steven Martina wants to make the city of Willemstad tax-free. During the budget debate in Parliament, the Minister declared that the legislation is in the making and he will soon present it to the MP’s for debate and approval.

According to Martina, it is possible to make Willemstad a tax-free city. The idea is to make Willemstad attractive again for shopping to both locals and international visitors. This will increase the sales and as a result, compensate for the loss of income from sales tax.

The Government is doing its utmost to generate income without having to take any austerity measures. The Prime Minister already indicated in the beginning of his government that the people of Curaçao are not able to deal with more austerity measures. The government must be creative in jump-starting the economy to generate more income.

Making Willemstad tax free is one of these creative ideas to generate more income and to make the city thrive again.
