Quarter of households live below poverty line
WILLEMSTAD – In 2011 a research done by the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) showed that a quarter of all households on the island lived under the poverty line. The exact number was 25.1% of the households. The CBS indicated then that these were mostly households where the mother is at the head or the head is looking for work.
The indications are that this is still the case in 2016. This is according to the outgoing Minister of Labor, Social Affairs and Welfare, Ruthmilda Larmonie during the International Day of Poverty Eradication.
In 2016, the poverty threshold for a single adult household is 1228 guilders (693 dollars) per month.
