Rhuggenaath and Camelia-Römer received more votes than their party leaders
WILLEMSTAD – After the Supreme Electoral Council (SEC) published the results per candidate in the last elections, it became clear that former Prime Minister, Gerrit Schotte received the highest amount of votes, 8854.
Remarkable are also two Ministers in the current government, Eugene Rhuggenaath and Suzanne Camelia-Römer. Both received more votes than their party leaders. Rhuggenaath, who is a PAR member, received 6431 votes, which is about three thousand more than his leader, the Member of Parliament, Zita Jesus-Leito.
Suzanne Camelia-Römer, who is a PNP member, received 3443 votes, and her leader Humphrey Davelaar only 1689 votes. This brings Davelaar’s position as leader of the green party in dispute. There are two groups in the party, one in favor of Davelaar as their leader, and the other group in favor of Camelia-Römer’s leadership. Camelia-Römer was already the leader of the green party and is very popular, especially after her tough stance against illegality on the island.
Many experts indicate that the reason for this popularity is because these two candidates are ministers and have done a good job in the government.
