Rhuggenaath: “Calculate increase minimum wages first”
WILLEMSTAD – “We must first calculate if the increase in the minimum wage is economically sensible,” said the Minister of Economic Development Eugene Rhuggenaath during the weekly press conference of the Council of Ministers recently.
Earlier this week, his colleague minister, Ruthmilda Larmonie-Cecilia of Social Development, Labor and Welfare announced that the government wants to raise the minimum wage incrementally. The minister said that this will start in January 2017.
According to Rhuggenaath, it is clear from earlier economic models of his ministry that in the case of a minimum wage increase there will be inflation and negative growth of the economy.
Although Larmonie-Cecilia has thought about that before announcing the increase, Rhuggenaath still wants to calculate it to avoid jeopardizing the fragile economic growth.
