Schotte: “Multimillion fraud by local bank under supervision of the Central Bank”
WILLEMSTAD – Leader of the opposition party MFK, Gerrit Schotte once again raised questions about the multimillion embezzlement at the local Girobank. His party requested a Central Committee meeting of parliament on this issue twice, but was ignored both times by the president of parliament. The MFK also wants to hear the Minister of Finance, Dr. Jose Jardim and the Supervisory Board of the Central Bank of Curaçao and Sint Maarten (CBCS) on this matter.
In an extensive letter to the president of parliament, Shotte proposes again a series of questions about this embezzlement issue. Last year Girobank was placed under the receivership of the Central Bank and more than a week ago the new management of the bank filed a lawsuit against two former Directors, Eric Garcia and Stephen Capella for embezzlement.
The MFK leader indicated in his letter that the CBCS played a pernicious role by exercising inadequate supervision. This made the fraud possible.
“Clients of the bank are seriously concerned about the situation. This is why it is important for Minister Jardim to come to parliament as soon as possible to answer our questions. Not within the prescribed six weeks, but within three weeks. If he can’t do this we will be compelled to request another meeting, this time a public meeting.”
