Schotte: “The Netherlands is behind case against me”
WILLEMSTAD – According to the former Prime Minister of Curaçao, Gerrit Schotte and his lawyer Eldon Peppie Sulvaran, the Netherlands is behind the lawsuit against the politician. Schotte is being accused of money laundering and forgery. The Public Prosecutor (OM) demanded on Wednesday a three-year prison sentence against him.
On his social media, Schotte wrote that the Netherlands has spent millions on the investigation against him. “They are trying to influence the composition of a new government in Curaçao.”
According to Schotte, the Netherlands wants to make sure he doesn’t come to power again. The former Prime Minister’s lawyer argues in his pleading of more than 100 pages that Schotte’s trial is politically motivated.
Schotte made history in 2010 when he became the first Prime Minister of the new country Curaçao. He stayed in power till 2012. He founded the political party MFK that is currently the largest opposition party with five seats. The OM indicated that Schotte founded the party with money from Sint Maarten’s casino boss, the Italian Francesco Corallo. According to the Italian Ministry of the Interior, Corallo is linked to the Italian mafia.
