SDKK violates human rights

Prison CuracaoWILLEMSTAD - According to the Council for Law Enforcement (RvR) illegals are 'not treated according to current standards' within the Sentro di Detenshon i Korekshon Kòrsou (SDKK) (Curaçao prison). The treatment, according to the inspection survey, is even contrary to the European Convention on Human Rights.

The RvR did an investigation into the quality and safety of prisoners and staff at the SDKK prison.

The investigation shows that the newly arrived illegal immigrants do not have the same status as other detainees. Thus, this group does not get legal aid. In addition, there are no house rules. However, there is a day program, but the implementation is minimal. According to the report, the opportunity to vent is not always offered.

There is also a lack of medical experts to assist the illegal. The only improvements in recent years have been the renovation and hygiene improvements.
