Second Tuesday of September: Opening Parliamentary Year

parliamentWILLEMSTAD - Today was the opening of the new parliamentary year in Curaçao. This has been a tradition since the time of the Netherlands Antilles. Yesterday, the President of Parliament William Millerson gave a presentation on all the activities of the last parliamentary year. Millerson also talked about the attendance of each Member of Parliament and indicated through a spreadsheet who attended the meetings and who didn’t.

Of the 13 general and committee meetings, Amparo dos Santos of Korsou di Nos Tur only showed up twice. The attendance of MFK leader Gerrit Schotte has also been low.

This year the opening was different. For instance, the military ceremony, which normally takes place before the opening of parliament, did not take place this year because they are all in St. Maarten due to the relief efforts after the ravage caused by Hurricane Irma.

In addition, it was a busy year for the Curaçao Parliament. According to President Millerson, there were two elections, six Presidents, and three different parliamentary assemblies.
