Smartmatic machines were destroyed end of last year
WILLEMSTAD – After waiting for so long to receive the results of the pre-election round, many wondered where the voting machines Smartmatic were and if it isn’t a good idea to use them in the upcoming elections.
According to the chairman of the Supreme Electoral Council Raymond Römer, the government has destroyed all voting machines last year.
The destruction was motivated by the fact that the voting machines were outdated and obsolete in terms of software. The machines were stored up until the end of last year in the building of the Registrar’s Office (Kranshi) in Otrabanda. But because the government had plans to use the room as the Office of Licenses, which is currently in Santa Rosa, they had to get rid of the machines to create space. The responsible Minister, Etienne van der Horst was approached and gave permission to destroy the machines.
