The Government extends its condolences to the families of the victims – Investigation already started

WILLEMSTAD – Vice Prime Minister Mr. Cornelis Smits and Minister of Public Health Mr. Stanley Bodok have convoked a press conference on the firework warehouse explotion at Seru Loraweg. Chief of Police Mr. Marlon Wernet, Chief of Fire Department Mr. Elvin Regina and Senior Public Prosecutor Mr. Philemijn van Logten were arelso present.

Vice Prime Minister Smits expressed his condolences to the families of the victims who passed away and wished soon healing for those who were wounded during the incident. He emphasized that investigations already started on what caused the explosion. The police and fire department are already doing the technical investigation.

Minister Bodok also added his words of support to the families of those who passed away and those who are wounded. He reiterated that it is important to keep heads cool and to calmly await the results of the investigation. The area was closed to prevent more victims. The victims that were badly burned were sent to Colombia for further treatment, the Minister emphasized. “There is physical damage but also mental. That is why we have requested the victim’s hotline (PSI) and Red Cross to give assistance to those who need this kind of help,” according to the Minister.

Chief of Police Mr. Wernet also expressed his condolences to those who lost their loved ones. The police has urged the community to not enter the premises where the warehouse was located. The area is closed for investigations. They also urge the community to call 911 if they have seen something suspicious or if they have any tip. They can also call if they have suffered major damages to their property.

Mr. Regina of the Fire Department said that in a situation like this, personal security comes first. Priority is to prevent more explosions and expansion of the fire. The building next to the warehouse also caught fire but it in a relatively short time it was dominated.

Senior Prosecutor announced once again that the technical investigation has started.
