The Netherlands supports Curaçao with processing the influx of Venezuelans

Stef BlokWILLEMSTAD - The Netherlands will deploy the Immigration and Naturalization Service (IND) to Curaçao in the processing of the influx of refugees from Venezuela. The IND will separate the real refugees from the economic refugees. The Netherlands also donates 100,000 euros to increase the capacity of the detention centers on the island to confine illegal Venezuelans.

The Kingdom Minister of Foreign Affairs said that in a press conference during a visit to Curaçao.

Blok sees the reception of refugees on Curaçao, Sint Maarten, and Aruba as a responsibility of the islands themselves. There is a large migration flow from Venezuela, but according to Blok this mainly concerns economic refugees. There are very few people who can be recognized as refugees because they are being persecuted personally.

Even if many refugees have to be taken care of, Blok does not see that as a task for the Netherlands. Then, according to him, the UNHCR, the UN refugee organization, must find a solution.

Venezuela is suffering from a deep economic crisis. Many people try to flee the country and try to cross over to Curaçao, for example.

Blok received a petition from worried citizens after his press conference. They believe that refugees in Curaçao are treated inhumane. Blok said in response that he is going to discuss the problem of Venezuelans in Colombia, where the problem is even greater.
