The Netherlands supports wish IOC membership

Frans TimmermansWILLEMSTAD - Minister of Foreign Affairs Frans Timmermans wrote a letter to the International Olympic Committee (IOC). In it, he calls attention to the desire of Curacao to become member of the organization.

Since the breakup of the Netherlands Antilles, Curaçao and Sint Maarten may not participate under their own flag at the Olympics. During the press conference with the Prime Minister and the Dutch Minister of Foreign Relations in Fort Amsterdam, the minister added that he is going to celebrate, together with Curacao, any medal received by the Curacao athlete, Churandy Martina.

The Netherlands Antilles was a member of the IOC, but since the new political structure of the Dutch Caribbean islands, each island has tried to become a member. But the IOC does not recognize Sint Maarten and Curacao as independent nations.
