Transit airports in Curaçao and Aruba

AirportTHE HAGUE, WILLEMSTAD - To strengthen the economy of Sint Maarten, Curaçao and Aruba, the airports of the islands should become an important transfer location for passengers on routes between Europe and Latin America, and between North and South America. That is what the Dutch government coalition parties CDA and D66 propose.

A 'modest hub' is not only good for the economy, it also offers opportunities for new routes for airlines within the Kingdom, according to D66 MP Paternotte and CDA MP Amhaouch.

The MPs believe that the government should help Sint Maarten, Curaçao and Aruba to conclude new aviation treaties.

There is also a Dutch interest in the background because a large part of the parliament is concerned about Curaçao. For the international airport, remarkably many aviation treaties have recently been concluded with other countries, including the oil state Qatar.

In the Netherlands, there is a fear of competition for their own KLM, which has had a solid position on the routes to and from Europe for decades.
