UNESCO’s answer to Schotte: “We shall not fail to follow up closely…”
WILLEMSTAD – Recently the leader of the opposition party MFK, Gerrit Schotte contacted the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to complain about the violation of the agreement for the conservation of the World Heritage site of the Historic Area of Willemstad, Inner City and Harbor of Curaçao.
Last year, the opposition leader stated in a press release that after receiving the UNESCO recognition in 1997 in a session held in Napoli, Cabinet Asjes, represented by the Minister of Urban Planning, Earl Balborda, is throwing away 300 years with their stubbornness to build a hospital right in the middle of Otrabanda.
Schotte received a reply from Kishore Rao, who is the Director of the World Heritage Centre of UNESCO. In his reply, Mr. Rao stated that Schotte can be assured that they have taken due note of the information provided by the party leader regarding the hospital project within the boundaries of the World Heritage property. “We shall not fail to follow up closely on this matter with the competent national authorities and ICOMOS International, the Advisory Body of the World Heritage Committee.”
The letter was also sent to the Permanent Delegation of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to UNESCO.
