Unions on strike; ready to paralyze the entire island

Errol-CovaWILLEMSTAD - The members of eleven trade unions are currently taking action. Last night they come together and decide how they will protest against the dismissals at the telecommunication company UTS and the increase of car insurance. They are also on strike in favor of an increase in the minimum wage.

The unions had given the cabinet of Prime Minister Eugene Rhuggenaath the time until yesterday to come up with an acceptable proposal after Friday's meeting. On Saturday, the union leader Errol Cova said that only concrete decisions would keep the 'solidarity unions' from taking action. Yesterday the trade union leaders received a 'five-page answer'.

“A lot of words, but little news,” said Cova. This is a provocation to confrontation. The entire trade unionism is being pushed aside.” According to Cova, the government writes that it understands the people who are unemployed and living in poverty, but at the same time maintains its position.

Cova: “The message is: we feel the pain, but we just continue as we want.”
