Van Vollenhoven: “Bickering can break Kingdom apart”

Van VollenhovenTHE HAGUE, WILLEMSTAD - The constant bickering between the Netherlands, Aruba, Curaçao and Sint Maarten is a threat to the kingdom. This is according to Mr. Pieter van Vollenhoven in an interview with a Dutch newspaper. "The many current mutual reproaches can break the Kingdom apart."

"The lack of new content and appealing momentum has become the main problem for the Kingdom," Van Vollenhoven, who is a member of the Royal Family, which has traditionally close ties with the islands, said He is also chairman of the committee Kingdom Relations, a group of eminent persons who advocated strong links between the Netherlands and the Caribbean countries.

Kingdom Day

Today was Kingdom Day. Tonight King Willem-Alexander attended the annual Kingdom Concert in Amsterdam. In Rolzaal the Binnenhof, a commemoration was held with a symposium on the Charter for the Kingdom of the Netherlands, which was signed by Queen Juliana sixty years. In this charter the relations between the Netherlands and the (former) Netherlands Antilles were recorded - on the way to an independence which (other than for Suriname) never came.
