Venezuela threatened with closure Curacao refinery

oil refineryWILLEMSTAD - Venezuela threatened to close the refinery in Curaçao if the Venezuelan drug suspect, Hugo Carvajal, who was arrested in Aruba, was not released.

The South American country was trying to exercise pressure on the Netherlands by threatening with economic sanctions. This was stated by the United States on Tuesday.

General Carvajal was arrested last week Wednesday in Aruba at the request of the U.S. According to the U.S. the diplomat, has engaged himself in drug trafficking. The intention was that he would be extradited to the United States.

Still, he was released on Sunday night after the Netherlands had decided that the former consul has diplomatic immunity.

The U.S. now claims that Venezuela, through its diplomatic channels, had set up a trap for the Netherlands. According to a manager of the refinery, some employees of the Venezuelan State Oil Company (PDVSA) came to talk about the possible closure of the Isla Refinery.
