Wilsoe: “Fraud at SOAW Ministry should be taken with a pinch of salt”
WILLEMSTAD – “The news that millions have been defrauded at the Ministry of Social Development, Labor and Welfare (SOAW) should be taken with a pinch of salt.” This is according to the former Member of Parliament and former Minister of Justice for the Pueblo Soberano (PS) party, Elmer Wilsoe to the Dutch newspaper Antilliaans Dagblad.
His reaction came after a report of the Court of Audit was leaked to the media. The report indicated that the Minister of SOAW placed her signature under purchase orders without authorization from the Ministry of Finance. In fact, according to the Ministry of Finance, no Minister is authorized to sign purchase orders.
But, according to Elmer Wilsoe, there is no mention in the report of the Court of Audit of corruption. The report only gives an account of an investigation into whether the ministries have complied with the applicable procedures.
Meanwhile the opposition party MFK requested a public meeting of Parliament to discuss the report. Party leader Gerrit Schotte dubbed the report “PO (purchase order)-gate. The public debate is to hold government officials accountable for “squandering the people’s money” said MFK.
