Working party for more efficiency within government

WILLEMSTAD – The government has appointed a working party that is to study ways to cut back the expenditure of the government even more and to increase the efficiency of the apparatus. Minister of Finance, José Jardim announced this recently during the discussion of the budget of the country Curaçao. The working party will be chaired by the institution Government Accountants Bureau (Soab), and consists of officials from Finance and Administration, Planning and Service (BPD). The working party will concentrate on three areas as regards attempts to reduce the government’s expenditure. Personnel costs but also (rent) contracts and subsidies will be reviewed. The original reason to appoint the working party was to realize a better synergy between the apparatuses, from which the civil service apparatus of the country Curaçao is built up: the former island territory Curaçao and the former country the Netherlands Antilles. The objective of the working party is to present economies, and make procedures more efficient to reduce the expenditure of the apparatus.

The plans from the working party will focus on the construction of a new office complex for the government to accommodate all government services. According to Jardim, this will lead to procedures in the government apparatus for a more efficient functioning of the government apparatus.

With a main office complex the government hopes to realize substantial economies as regards rent, telephone costs, the leasing of peripheral equipment, security and gasoline, according to Jardim. During the budgetary discussion the Minister of Finance spoke of an enormous potential to enforce economies.

The working party is currently drawing up a business case for the new office complex, said Jardim. Based on this proposal the government can approve the next course.
