Zika update: Message from Government, CTB and CHATA to current and future visitors
WILLEMSTAD – Today the Minister of Economic Development, Mr. Eugene Rhuggenaath, the Curaçao Tourist Board (CTB) and the Curaçao Hotel and Tourism Association (CHATA) held a press conference to give an update on the Zika virus.
The Government of Curaçao is taking the Zika virus problem seriously. Minister Rhuggenaath has indicated that the Ministry of Public Health has a plan to limit the Mosquito’s population and it is also requesting the people of Curaçao to help limit the number of breeding places.
The CHATA representative said during his presentation that the hotels are not getting a lot of questions from current & future guests. The majority of the questions received by large hotels are from guests from the European market. Small hotels received a number of questions from guests that want or still need to travel to Curaçao.
“Hotels are prepared and have enough information to provide their guests. (ZIKA GUIDELINES FOR TRAVELLERS COMING TO THE CARIBBEAN & Guidelines for Hotels was shared). Most of the hotels contracted pest control services to eradicate mosquitos. All hotels are also avoiding standing water around their property,” said the CHATA representative.
According to CTB, the ground tour operators reported that there are no cancellations due to the Zika virus news. Tour operators are receiving a number of questions regarding the virus, but these operators are sending information to their clients.
Airline call centers are receiving calls on the Zika situation. There is an increase in “rescheduling “of existing trips to Curaçao by pregnant guests. There is also flexibility for pregnant women on the island to receive priority when indicated the need to fly back home. This is because the virus can have a negative effect on the baby.
The Government and the CTB are doing their utmost to give information about the Zika virus. They have published the Folder-GeneralPrecautionAgainstMosquitoBites-ENG and the Poster-GeneralPrecautionAgainstMosquitoBites-ENG-NL-SPA in English, Dutch and Spanish.
