China says US-Cuba rapprochement helps regional stability and development
BEIJING, China - China has backed efforts by Cuba and the United States to reestablish diplomatic links and to advance towards the normalization of relations, which is in the interest of the two nations and helps stability and development in the Americas.
Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Hong Lei told media accredited in Beijing that China has maintained the position that the Cuban people have their right to choose their own development path and determine their internal affairs, which must be respected.
China welcomes and supports the normalization of relations between Cuba and the United States, said Hong Lei who added that they are interested in the stability and development of the western hemisphere.
Hong also expressed his satisfaction to have seen the two countries addressing the reestablishment of relations on the basis of mutual respect, on equal grounds and with non interference in their internal affairs.
Presidents Barack Obama and Raul Castro held a bilateral meeting in Panama, during the Summit of the Americas, which was considered a historic event since this was the first time that such an encounter had taken place in over half a century.
