Hurricane Irma’s first damages become clear

SXM-Irma-orkaan-ravagePHILIPSBURG, WILLEMSTAD - The eye of hurricane Irma has passed over the Leeward Islands. The islands are now experiencing the second half of this major category five storm which has been named catastrophic. Due to power outages, it has been hard to receive information from media colleagues, friends, and family members.

What we know for sure is that there are roofs which have been blown away from several houses. There are buildings now without windows. Parts of the island of St. Maarten, both Dutch and French side are flooded. According to information that we have some buildings are actually vibrating because of the pressure difference between inside and outside.

We can also confirm that on the French side, specifically Grand Case, the residents, and visitors have been evacuated by the gendarmerie.

There is still no information about fatal victims of the hurricane.
